How to Apply for a Place at QEGS
There are two routes into Queen Elizabeth Grammar School: joining at the start of Year 7 (the normal admissions round), or applying for a place during the school year (in-year admissions).
Joining in Year 7 (Normal Admissions Round)
Places at QEGS are offered on the basis of aptitude for the academic nature of the education the school provides. Aptitude is assessed through our entrance test. Applying is a three-stage process that begins when your child is in Year 5.
Step 1: Register for the entrance test (May–June of Year 5)
Parents and carers register their child for the entrance test online during May and June while the child is in Year 5. The registration link will appear on this page when registration opens.
Step 2: Your child sits the entrance test (September of Year 6)
The entrance test takes place in September at the start of Year 6. Information about the format of the test, along with familiarisation guides for children and parents, can be found in the links on the right.
Step 3: Apply through your local authority (by 31st October of Year 6)
Pupils who pass the entrance test are then invited to apply for a place through their home local authority’s secondary admissions process. You must name QEGS as a preference on the local authority application form (SA3) by 31st October.
Please note: registering for and sitting the entrance test does not by itself count as an application. You must also complete the local authority form, or a valid application will not have been made.
What happens next
Offers of places are made by the local authority on National Offer Day (1st March). Where the school is oversubscribed, places are allocated using the oversubscription criteria in the Admissions Policy for the relevant year. If you are not offered a place, you have the right to appeal (see Admission Appeal Information below).

In-Year Admissions (Years 8–11, and Year 7 from the Spring Term)
If you would like your child to join QEGS during the school year, or in Years 8 to 11, please email to request an in-year application form.
Vacancies are rare and are normally filled from the waiting list for the relevant year group. To join the waiting list your child will need to sit an entrance test. If your child has already taken suitable tests at their current school, it may be possible to use those results, provided the current school supplies and verifies them independently.
Any places that become available are allocated using the Governing Body’s admissions policy. Time spent on the waiting list does not affect priority. To keep your child’s name on the waiting list, please contact the school during the first week of July each year to confirm your continued interest. If we do not hear from you, your child’s name will be removed from the list.
